“Up to a point” is better for all of us who need help, I think!?! Otherwise we never do it by ourselves (or at least, I’ve found that to be true for me). She was doing him a favor by teaching him to fish :).
Your writing resonates with me and just recently “discovered” your rich body of works. This feeling reminds me of the my younger self and the impact of embarking on a new journey had on me. I’m excited to have been introduced to you through Substack. Thanks for your very cool talent
There's another poem about her that I'll share here some day, and which refers to "a streak of melancholy, stubborn and apparent / as silver in earth-dark hair." And that's all I'll say about that, I think.
What a fantastic story. Thank you so much for sharing it. And I really love the tone and structure of the poem. A story, plainly told can often be more effective than a lot of literary gymnastics. We poets sometimes forget that. I just got off the phone with my own mom's hospice nurse. He told me things are shifting. She's not transitioning yet, but probably soon. And the very next second your post popped into my inbox and I was immersed in your memory of your mom and it reminded that one day it will be easier to remember my mom as she was, before dementia. So thank you, friend, for your brilliant timing and the compassionate way you move through the world. You are a marvel and a tonic. 🤗💕
i absolutely love this! thanks for sharing :)
Thanks so much for reading, p&c!
I can see this whole interaction so clearly. The last line is perfect 💛.
Such a fearless young woman! Helpful, too ... up to a point. 😉

Elizabeth!
You're so kind, and I'm delighted to have been "discovered" by you! Grateful that we're both on Substack.
This is such a wonderful story and poem. Your picture of your mom as a teenager is so vivid. What a fabulous story to have from your mom.
Thanks so much, LeeAnn!
I knew your mother In glimpses and only after the high school day was over.
Such a terrific story showing your mom’s chutzpah even then.
so glad you highlighted this wonderful story/memory of your mom.
She always loved it when you came over, Looocinda, and so did I!
Lots of love to you, sister-at-heart.
Laughing, laughing, laughing: Thank you!
So glad you had fun with it, Shari!
Really enjoyed that. What was her ailment, if I may ask and if not, I’m sure your inherited legacy of forthrightness will set me straight.😉
So glad you enjoyed it, Wes!
